SAINT GERMAIN DES PRES / MONTPARNASSE
The St Germain des Prés area known for its lovely, small church as well as for its narrow streets, antique shops, restaurants, cafes and Jazz-clubs. The intellectual ferment of the golden days of the 1950’s and the existentialists are gone but the charm is still working even though it has now turned into one of the most chic areas in Paris and houses all famous fashion labels. The main focus of the bustle is Carrefour de Buci with its street market, basic stores and fine creators of gourmet delicatessens.
At the turn of the 20 century, Montparnasse, a rural district, was favoured by the artists of the Paris School and between the two world wars it was frequented by the lost generation of American writers. Today the streets of Montparnasse are as lively as ever with shoppers in the day while the brightly lit posters attract film lovers to the cinemas in the evening. The road crossing Boulavard Montparnasse – Rue de Rennes never sleeps. There is a quieter, residential part of the neighbourhood too, beyond the cemetery on the other side of Boulevard Montparnasse.
